ELKINS — Despite overcast skies and a light rain, 123 area youth took part in the annual Mayor’s Johnny Keller Intra-City Track Meet at the Elkins High School track Tuesday night.

“It was gratifying to see so many kids giving it their all, smiling and cheering each other on throughout the meet,” said Elkins Parks and Recreation Commission Director Tom Tesar. “I’d like to thank Gino’s Pizza, Elkins High School, the EPRC summer staff and the many dedicated volunteers who make this event happen.”

The area school with the best turnout was Midland Elementary. The school earned a $300 prize for the school’s physical education department for having the best participation rate with 14 percent of the school’s student body taking part.

“The parents here at Midland have been a great support all year,” said Midland physical education teacher Todd Price. “My hat goes off to them for doing their best in stressing the importance of staying involved in an activity. I am very proud of the students that did commit their evening to participating in this event.”

Jennings Randolph Elementary had the second best participation rate with 9.6 percent of its students taking part to earn a $200 award for the school. Beverly Elementary was a close third with 7.2 percent followed by Third Ward Elementary with 5.5 percent and North Elementary with 3.2 percent.
