Lady Jackets fall in state tourney

VIENNA — The Lady Yellow Jackets didn’t quite achieve their goal of a state championship Thursday, falling to Sherman, 6-0, in the semi-final round of the Class A state tournament. Moorefield (29-9) finished the season in third place in Class A, with the loss.

“We could not hit the Sherman pitcher,” MHS assistant coach Julie Markwood said. “It was just weird, we could not hit her. She wasn’t overpowering, she didn’t throw a lot of junk. We just couldn’t hit her.”

Autumn Thompson earned the victory on the mound for Sherman. She went the distance, giving up three hits and striking out five batters. Thompson also helped her own cause at the plate, going 1 for 4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.

Haylee Clendenin, 1 for 4 with a home run, 1 RBI and two runs scored, along with Katlyn Jenkins, 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Madelynn Toney, 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, also played well for Sherman.

Bethany Smith shouldered the loss for MHS. She went four innings, surrendering four runs on five hits while walking one batter. Rebekah Markwood entered the game in relief and tossed two innings. She gave up two runs on four hits and struck out three batters.

Sumer Flinn, Alyssa Vetter and Paige Crites collected one hit each for the Lady Yellow Jackets.

“It was a good season,” Markwood said. “We were hoping to get to the 30 win mark. We ended up 29 and 9. We play a very tough schedule, so to have a season like we did was an achievement. We play a tough schedule during the regular season to prepare us for the end of year tournament, which I felt like it did. Up until yesterday and today, hitting wasn’t an issue for us. For them to shut us down like they did in two games was uncharacteristic for us. Our bats just went cold. When you don’t hit, you don’t score and when you don’t score, you don’t win. The girls had a great season. The team comradery was wonderful. They really blended well together as a team.”

Wheeling Central later downed Sherman, 6-3, to claim the Class A State Championship.

After the tournament, Moorefield’s Rebekah Markwood and Emma Baker were named to the All-Tournament team.
