Lady Yellow Jackets still alive

VIENNA — The Lady Yellow Jackets’ hopes of a state championship are still alive, after Moorefield finished 1-1 on Wednesday in the Class A state tournament at Jackson Memorial Park in Vienna. MHS fell to Sherman, 2-1, in the first game, but rallied back to defeat Fayetteville, 8-2, in the second contest.

Moorefield will now face Sherman at 9:30 a.m. today. The winner will square off against Wheeling Central and have to defeat them twice to claim the state title. The loser will be eliminated.

“It was a rainy, dreary day,” MHS assistant coach Julie Markwood said. “In the first game against Sherman, we did not hit the ball at all, but we played spot on defense. It was phenomenal defense to watch. We just couldn’t get any hits. We had 3 hits …. We were just really flat with the bats but it was a great defensive game for our girls. Then we had a little bit of a break and harder rain came … Then we went back into the park and played Fayetteville. We hit a lot better that game and beat them 8-2.”

In the first game, Moorefield was up 1-0 in the sixth inning against Sherman when Sydnee Ferrell singled off Hanna Carlson to drive in two runs.

Carlson shouldered the loss for MHS. She went 2/3 of an inning, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out two batters. Bethany Smith started the contest. She tossed 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits.

Rebekah Markwood, Emma Baker and Anna Riggleman recorded the three hits for Moorefield. Baker drove in the run.

Autumn Thompson went the distance to earn the victory for Sherman. She struck out six batters and gave up one run on three hits.

“The girls are still on a mission,” Markwood said. “It took a little bit of air out of them to take the 2-1 loss, but after a well played game, they didn’t have anything to hang their heads about and they know that. So now, they’re backed against the wall. We’re going to come out swinging and hopefully still be swinging at the end of the day.”

In the second game, FHS drew first blood going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. However, Moorefield retaliated with 8 unanswered runs. Fayetteville managed to push one more run across the plate in the sixth inning.

Rebekah Markwood earned the victory for the Lady Yellow Jackets. She threw seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out four batters. At the plate, she went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Baker and Smith both finished the game 2 for 3 with one RBI. Sumer Flynn, Carmen Ketterman, Macie Zirk and Paige Crites collected RBIs, while Ketterman, Anna Riggleman and Alyssa Vetter scored runs.
