MILL CREEK — With bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday, Austin Simmons drew a walk to push the game-winning run across the plate and help Tygarts Valley defeat Notre Dame, 6-5, and claim the Class A Region II Section 1 championship.

The Bulldogs will now face East Hardy next week in a best-of-three series for the Regional Championship.

“I’m really proud of these kids,” TVHS coach James Markley said. “The heart they’ve shown this whole week has been absolutely incredible. They could have quit when we were down 5 to 1 and a few breaks didn’t go our way, but they didn’t. We faced a lot of adversity the last couple of days and have just continued to fight for this sectional championship. What a win.”

Hunter Lanham earned the victory on the mound. He went 2 innings in relief, giving up 1 hit and no runs. Logan George started the game and tossed 3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, while striking out 3 batters and walking 4 others.

Caleb Riggleman also took a turn on the mound, going 2 innings and scattering 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 4 batters.
