TVHS triumphs in extra innings
CLARKSBURG — Rece Wamsley ripped a 2-run double in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday, to help Tygarts Valley defeat Notre Dame, 13-10, in the Class A Region II Section 1 tournament.
The Bulldogs will now host the Irish today at 6 p.m. for the sectional championship.
“It was a real good win for us tonight,” TVHS coach James Markley said. “The guys showed a lot of heart. Even when we came out and scored three runs and then they answered back with three runs, we never quit fighting. Now we have to come out (today) and do it again. We know it’s going to be another fight.”
The game was tied at 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday, when officials postponed play due to a lighting issue.
When the Bulldogs took their bats in the top of the seventh on Wednesday, they pushed 3 runs across the plate to take a 10-7 advantage. Not to be outdone, the Fighting Irish battled back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the stanza to tie the game 10-10 and force extra innings.
With the game tied at 10 in the top of the ninth, Wamsley cracked a double to drive in two runs to give TVHS the lead. The Bulldogs added another insurance run before the inning was over.
Brett Smith earned the victory for TVHS. He threw 2 2/3 innings, giving up no runs and 3 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. Wamsley threw for TVHS on Tuesday. In 6 innings of work, he scattered 7 runs on 9 hits, while striking out 7 batters.
Wamsley also led the charge at the plate. He went 3 for 4 with a double, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Caleb Riggleman went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored, while Logan George went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Other notable performances included: Marcus Reynolds, 1 for 4 with a run scored; Austin Lanham, 1 for 4; Brett Smith, 2 for 6 with 2 RBIs and a run scored; Hunter Lanham, 2 for 6 with 2 runs and 1 RBI; Austin Simmons, 2 for 5 with 1 run; and Garrett Swecker, 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
Samuel Romano took the loss for Notre Dame. In 4 innings, he gave up 6 runs on 7 hits and struck out 5 batters. Noah Yokum started for NDHS Tuesday. He went 2 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits.
The Bulldogs will now host Notre Dame today at 6 p.m. The winner will claim the sectional championship and advance to the state tournament next week.
