June practices going well for local football squads

ELKINS — June football practices at several local schools are coming to a close this week.

A few weeks remain for football players before they report to camp in August. Local coaches said all squads will still welcome aspiring athletes, while trying to work them into the fold.

“During the summer, you have to deal with all-stars, vacations and baseball,” Elkins head coach Evan Hott said.

“The way we look at it, we’d rather they be there throughout, but it’s something we deal with. I know what it’s like to wear shoes on both feet.

“We’re really not trying to run anyone off, or say where they should be when,” he said. “We understand and take everything into consideration.”

At Buckhannon-Upshur, coach Duane Stoeckle said the Bucs have had a solid June.

“Every year, you have people come out for the season in August, and sometimes they are a pleasant surprise,” he said. “Our guys that have been here are going to hit the ground running.

“Everyone is welcome to come out, and even if they may not produce right away, they can be potential players in the future.”

Tygarts Valley head coach Rodney Bright said the Bulldogs are starting out strong for the slate ahead.

“We’ve had a good turnout for June with 25 to 30 players reporting to camp so far,” he said. “They’ve been in the weight room, and we have put in some good work on offense and defensive sides of the ball.

“We’ve had a real good turnout in June, and are looking forward to even more kids showing up in August,” he added.

Philip Barbour head coach Russ Collett said the Colts have had a great turnout.

“Anybody is welcome, and we hope we have enough helmets in August for eligible players,” he said. “We had a great turnout in June, and practices have went well
