PHILIPPI — A pair of opposing seniors put the first two goals of the evening in the net Wednesday at BC Bank Park as the visiting Lady Buccaneers of B-UHS took on the Philip Barbour Colts in a tune-up scrimmage game.

Senior Molly Clark took care of a blocked shot from the left side for PBH and put it away for a 1-0 Lady Colts lead.

Buckhannon-Upshur 12th-grader Lauren Bennett worked her way past the 18-yard mark at the top of the goalie’s box and delivered a right-footed blast to tie the contest tied at 1-1. Buckhannon tacked on one more in the second half to get the preliminary slate victory.

“We’ve looked pretty good and haven’t been behind until tonight,” PBHS coach Pete Ferguson said. “I think the summer sessions are doing us a lot of good with a young squad returning.”

Buckhannon’s veteran coach Julie Zuliani said, “We have a large freshman class. When we figure out where they fit best in our system with our upperclassmen, we could have a really good season.

“We are pleased with tonight’s effort, and excited for the upcoming season to start.”

Zuliani also noted a PBHS player was injured during the scrimmage and showed genuine concern.

“I hope the PB player is OK. It’s always upsetting to see a player sidelined with an injury,” she said
