Post 29 blasts Buckhannon, 18-0

TENNERTON — Elkins Post 29 kept the scorekeeper hot Tuesday, as the team blanked Buckhannon Post 7, 18-0, in American Legion Area 5 action.

“We were a lot more focused,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “When we come ready to play, we’re pretty good. We knew it was an important (Area 5) game and that gets us to the top of the (Area 5) standings right now.

“We hit the ball pretty well. Matthew Gainer pitched a tremendous game. He didn’t give up a hit until the seventh inning. He was really in control of all three of his pitches. It was a good team win.”

Post 29 collected 18 hits in the contest. They scored 2 runs in the first inning, 3 runs in the third, 4 runs in the fifth, 1 run in the sixth and 8 runs in the seventh to earn the 10-run mercy rule victory.

Matthew Gainer (3-1) went the distance to earn the victory on the mound. In 7 innings, he gave up 2 hits and 2 walks and struck out 4 batters.

Sam Ross led the hit parade at the plate. He finished the game 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Other notable offensive performances came from: Jared Kerns, 3 for 6 with 3 runs and 1 RBI; Cole Harlan, 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs; Luke Petrice, 3 for 4 with 1 run and 2 RBIs; Brett Smith, 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs; and Justin Fike, 1 for 3 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.

Andrew Herron shouldered the loss for Post 7. He gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in 3 2/3 innings, while striking out 1 batter and walking another.

Mitch Williams and Drew Heatherly picked up the two hits for Buckhannon Post 7.

Elkins Post 29 (12-9, 3-1 Area 5) is set to host Preston County Post 56 today at 6 p.m. at Robin Harvey Memorial Field at Bluegrass Park.
