Post 29 cruises past Preston

ELKINS — Jared Kerns smashed a bases-clearing double Wednesday to help Elkins Post 29 cruise past Preston County Post 56, 13-3, in American Legion baseball action at Robin Harvey Memorial Field at Bluegrass Park.

“We started out well and ended up well, but we kinda snoozed through the middle innings,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “I do give credit to the team for finishing off Preston in seven innings.

“Our pitching was pretty good. I thought Ben Huffman pitched OK and I thought Cole Harlan came in and pitched well. We finally got to see Caleb Riggleman come alive at the plate. He had four hits tonight and he’s starting to see the ball well.”

Elkins got off to a hot start, pushing 4 runs across the plate in the first inning and later added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Preston answered with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. With the scorescore 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Post 29 erupted for 8 runs to take the 10-run mercy rule victory.

Ben Huffman earned the win on the mound. He scattered 5 hits and 2 earned runs over 5 innings pitched, while striking out 6 batters and walking 3 others. Cole Harlan entered the game in relief. In 2 innings, he struck out 4 batters and gave up zero runs and zero hits.

Caleb Riggleman had a huge day at the plate, going 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored. Rece Wamsley, 3 for 4 with a double, 1 run scored and 3 RBIs, along with Kerns, 1 for 4 with a double, 1 run and 3 RBIs, also played well.

Corey Pyles notched the loss for Preston County. In an inning of work, he gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and struck out 1 batter.

Elkins Post 29 (13-9, 3-1 Area 5) returns to action on Friday at Sissonville High School when the team takes on South Charleston Post 94 at 6 p.m
