Weather changes Post 29 schedule

ELKINS — With impending rain showers in the forecast Friday evening, Elkins Post 29 officials canceled today’s game at noon with Wheeling Post 1. However, as of press time, the game against Bridgeport Post 68 was still on for 5 p.m. at Robin Harvey Memorial Field at Bluegrass Park.

“It’s supposed to rain pretty hard through the night,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “It looks like, forecast-wise, it will be out of here by 11 a.m. (today).

“Wheeling has to play early, so there is no way they’re going to be able to make it. So the first game is canceled and the second game, we’re going to play Bridgeport at 5 p.m.”

So far this season, Post 29 has generated a 10-7 record. The team started out 8-1, but dropped the first four games of the Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic before bouncing back to defeat Tampa Bay Florida Select. This week, the team lost games against Bridgeport Post 68 and Braxton County Post 33 but stormed back to defeat Fairmont Post 17, 24-2, on Thursday.

“We started out strong,” George said. “We got into the Hardball and got up against some really good competition and got into a little rut. Early on this week, we really got into a rut. Of course we challenged the team (Thursday) against the Fairmont team and they responded well with a huge performance against a decent Fairmont team. Hopefully, we’ll play more consistent baseball. We’re almost to the halfway point of the season.”

Prior to today’s game, Post 29 outfielder Luke Petrice is scheduled to sign a letter of intent at 4 p.m. to play college baseball for Glenville State College.

With a slugging percentage of .797, Petrice was one of the most fearsome hitters in Class AA baseball for the Elkins Tigers. He finished the season with a .542 batting average and a .667 on base percentage. In 59 at bats, he generated 32 hits, including 15 doubles. He also only struck out 4 times during the season and drew 18 walks.
