Hoops Skills Camp offered at EHS

ELKINS — The third annual Hoops Skills Night School Basketball Camp is slated for July 24-27 at Elkins High School, where several learning opportunities for local players will be offered.

“We had over 60 campers in attendance last year and it was a great week,” camp organizer Amrit Rayfield said. “We are offering daily instruction that emphasizes skill development.”

The boys and girls age groups invited to the camp include any player entering fourth through ninth grade. The cost for the four-day camp that will run 5:30-9 p.m. daily is $80. Family and group discounts are available.

Officials at the Richard P. Simmons Memorial gymnasium will have the bleachers stowed away, and the auxiliary gym also mapped off to provide a good training ground at EHS.

“Players are grouped by age and ability,” Rayfield said. “We offer competitive games and competitions that teach tactical learning and teamwork. We have stations and drills set up specifically for the improvement in each facet of the game, on both offense and defense, too.

“On a daily basis, we will have 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games,” he added. “The kids have had a lot of fun and learned a lot so far at the camp. We have a solid group of staff members, and a lot of good game knowledge to pass on.”

Instructors will include current and former college basketball coaches and players, along with prep coaches, local standouts and guest speakers/teachers.

Rayfield was the Davis & Elkins College mens basketball head coach for eight years, where he helped produce several all-conference players. He coached St. Maria Goretti High School in Maryland for four years, where he was named Baltimore Catholic League Coach of the Year, and Coach of the Year by The Herald Mail.

Former EHS all-star Nick Patella put more than 1,000 points in the bucket for the Tigers, played for the WVU Mountaineers, and is currently the head coach for the D&E Senators. Patella will once again help out with the camp and bring real experience to the table.

The current boys and girls EHS basketball coaches, Brandon Simmons and Matt Davis, will also be on deck to help teach fundamentals and teamwork at the skills camp. Other local standouts like Jordan Lawson, Logan Phillips and Aaron Friedman will also offer support from the talent pool providing solid instructions.
