B-UHS Bucs are shut out

FAIRMONT — Class AAA Buckhannon-Upshur went scoreless for only the second time of the season Tuesday after dropping a 5-0 decision to fellow Big 10 Conference foe Fairmont Senior High School at East-West Stadium.

The Class AA FSHS Polar Bears moved to 12-0 on the year. With 23-0 and 17-1 wins over AAs Petersburg and Keyser, respectively, Fairmont West is apparently that good, and they keep pounding the net for more.

“Fairmont Senior was without a doubt one of the most solid, complete teams we’ve seen all year,” Buccaneers coach Mike Donato said. “They were able to transition quickly from back to front and were able to sustain an attack with less numbers. We did manage to play with them and possess the ball at times, but just couldn’t build on a consistent basis.

“We got caught playing too direct at times, losing possession to easily, and gave Fairmont quality chances, which you cannot do against a quality team. I do give most of our guys credit for playing hard and not quitting,” Donato added.

Fairmont got off 12 shots on goal compared to 4 attempts manufactured by Buckhannon-Upshur. It ended up a 6-2 count from the corner kicks awarded in favor of the Polar Bears, though the Bucs outfouled the hosts 12-8.

Logan Kelley collected 7 saves for B-U at the keeper position, and Fairmont’s Jacob Branch wrangled in 4 stops for Senior. Isaac Swiger notched 3 of the Bears’ goals in the scoring column.

Buckhannon-Upshur assistant coach Michael Tenney earned a yellow card for dissent in the first half.

The Buccaneers will look to right the ship today when they once again land at East-West Stadium for a Big 10 Conference scrum against the home-standing Bees of East Fairmont High School.
