Buccaneers soccer squad earns victory

WHEELING — Buckhannon-Upshur High School’s boys soccer team finished off a week of three straight games on the road with a 1-0 victory over Wheeling Park High School Saturday during Class AAA non-conference matters on the pitch.

The Buccaneers’ season record now stands at 6 wins, 3 losses and 4 ties.

“We had a bit of a slow start, but one could chalk that up to a long travel week and players in new spots in the formation,” B-UHS coach Mike Donato said. “Our second half was much more composed and in control, and it showed early as Ryan Hurst scored a great goal, and that sparked some momentum our way. Although it didn’t translate into another goal, we were able to create chances and limit Wheeling Park to just 3 more shots, none of which were on goal.”

After a scoreless first half, Hurst put the leather in the back of the net 7 minutes into the second period with an upper back post finish. Coleman Shreve inked 2 saves at the keeper spot for Buckhannon, and Zach Calvert recorded 3 stops for the hosting Patriots.

The visitors doubled Wheeling Park up, 4-2, with shots on goal, while WPHS notched a 3-0 mark in corner kick tries from the flagstick. Both squads were whistled for 11 fouls each, though the official did not have to issue any yellow or red cards during the contest.

Buckhannon-Upshur will return to action at home today when hosting Robert C. Byrd High School for a Big 10 Conference affair at 7:30 p.m.
