Bucs pick up Big 10 victory
BUCKHANNON — Buckhannon-Upshur’s Christian McKisic shot 2 under par at the Riverbend Golf Club on Tuesday to power the Buccaneers to a Big 10 Conference victory over Elkins, Grafton and Robert C. Byrd high schools.
“The Riverbend course is challenging in some places, but also forgiving in a lot of other places,” EHS coach David Baird said. “It’s not too difficult of a golf course. I saw some good things out there and I saw some bad things. It challenges your short game.
“The greens are small and rounded. If you’re missing the green, which is pretty easy to miss with it being small, you’ve just got to get them down and chip well and putt well. If you do that then you’re going to score well. If you’re struggling with chipping or putting, it will add up.”
Chase Reckart set the tone for the Tigers with 42 strokes. Dylan Reckart, 44 strokes, Luke Swecker, 45 strokes, and Jacob Pritt, 53 strokes, rounded out the team scoring for EHS. Gabrielle Bedford, 59 strokes, and Ivan Loony Sanders, 79 strokes, also shot for Elkins but did not count towards the team total.
“I was happy with one of my newcomers, Gabby Bedford, she was out there today,” Baird said. “She was a last-minute change because I had one kid get sick. I got her in the match at the last minute and she pared two holes today. She’s gotten better over the year. I was happy that she ended her regular season with a good round. She’ll be playing in our conference tournament and I think that will benefit her.
“Chase (Reckart) has been finding ways around the golf course to score better than what he had been earlier in the year. It’s all about scoring and I think he figured that out. I still got to get Dylan (Reckart) and Luke (Swecker) to work on their short game. That’s where it counts when it comes to scoring. Hopefully they can get that figured out before the Big 10 on Monday and the Regionals on the following Monday,” Baird added.
The Bucs won the competition with a combined team score of 162 strokes. Grafton took home second place with 174 stokes, Elkins finished third with 184 strokes and RCB placed fourth with 207 strokes.
McKisic earned the low medal with 34 strokes. Teammate Tanner Williams also played exceptionally well, finishing the nine-hole round with 38 strokes.
Elkins returns to action on Thursday at East Fairmont. Tee time is set for 4 p.m.
Buckhannon Upshur is also scheduled to play on Thursday.
The Bucs will face Bridgeport at 4 p.m
