Bucs pound Huskies
TENNERTON — Buckhannon-Upshur blasted out to a 4-0 lead at the half against North Marion High School, and then filled the net with 5 more goals in the second period to drop the Huskies 9-0 in Big 10 Conference play.
The Buccaneers took a lopsided 20-3 advantage in shots on goal, and blanked NMHS, 12-0, with corner kick set pieces attempted from the flagsticks.
“We had to play patient tonight because we knew going in that North Marion was going to pack it in and play to hit a player high on a release,” B-UHS coach Mike Donato said. “So we needed to win balls out of the air and look to create by changing the point of attack, and we did exactly that. Our runs and passing were able to create space in the middle to allow our midfield to attack.
“We also were able to use speed on the outside to send in a lot of quality balls,” Donato added. “Seeing the amount of goals tonight is one thing, but seeing that we had seven different goal scorers is what’s really impressive. We distributed the ball very well and got different players forward, balancing our attack.”
Joel Prats-Casada got the scoring underway with a successful penalty kick 15 minutes into the contest. That goal was followed by a score from Trevor Short off an Alek Seech assist, before Dawson Carpenter put the Bucs up 3-0. With less than 10 minutes to go before intermission, Zach Ward provided a corner kick assist to Kole Kessler for a comfortable 4-0 B-U advantage at the break.
A Seech to Ward combination right out of the second half gate put the hosts further out in front before Ian Greenough booted a rebound in for a near post finish and a 6-0 cushion for the Bucs. Greenough would later use a Lane Tenney cross for his second goal, and Short put back a rebound off the NMHS goal for an 8-0 mark. Tenney took a Tyler Sandreth assist and put it away in the seventy-eighth to finish off Buckhannon’s 9-0 shutout of the visiting Huskies.
The two squads were level at 8 fouls each. With all the offensive action by the Buccaneers, little saving was needed as Logan Kelley and Kasane Nomamoto inked 1 and 2 stops, respectively at the goal keeper’s position. North Marion was paced by Carson Bates with 11 saves.
Buckhannon-Upshur will play host to non-conference fellow Class AAA opponent George Washington High School at noon today.
