EHS Lady Tigers kick past Huskies
FARMINGTON — Rachel Phillips and Erin Dettinger scored two goals each as the Elkins High Lady Tigers cruised past North Marion, 7-3, in Big 10 Conference soccer action Tuesday.
“I thought we finished the ball well tonight,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said. “In some other games, we’ve had the opportunity to put teams away and we failed to do it and it was a struggle the rest of the game. I thought the girls did a great job of finishing the ball tonight. We put the team away early.”
The Lady Tigers got the scoring started when Phillips found the back of the net at about the 4-minute mark.
Phillips added another goal about halfway through the first half to extend the lead to 2-0.
North Marion lit the scoreboard on a free kick to make the score 2-1. However, Madison Holland put one past the NMHS goal keeper to put EHS up 3-1 at the half.
After the intermission, Dettinger found the net quickly with about 30 seconds into the second half. Less than a minute later, Sofia Triplett put EHS up 5-1. Only about 2 more minutes after that, Maiju Hyvarine extended the lead to 6-1.
Dettinger then capped the Elkins’ scoring with about 10 minutes left to go in the game. The Huskies added two late goals to make the final 7-3.
The Elkins offense was able to put 16 shots on goal during the game. EHS goal keepers Taylor Phillips and Madison Holland split time in the net and combined to stop 10 shots from North Marion.
Elkins (7-3-1) will host Fairmont Senior at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
