Lady Tigers edged by state champs, 1-0

WINFIELD — The Elkins High Lady Tigers faced their toughest opponent of the season so far on Saturday, falling 1-0 to defending Class AA West Virginia State Champion Winfield High School.

“The whole point was to go down there and play against the defending state champs to measure and see where we stand right now,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said.

“I was very proud of everyone’s effort against Winfield. We had great enthusiasm.

“I felt we matched their strength and toughness the entire 80 minutes of the game. It was a good game. I think we just need to maintain this same level of play as we moved back into conference action this week,” Cutright said.

The Lady Tigers played a solid first half, taking a 0-0 deadlock into the locker room at the intermission.

However, with about 12 minutes left in the game, Winfield’s Julianne Pauley found the back of the net to give the Lady Generals the victory.

Elkins (6-3-1) is set to travel to North Marion on Tuesday for a Big 10 Conference matchup. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
