ELKINS — The Elkins volleyball squad won their opening match of the season Thursday, downing Preston County in a closely fought contest.

Elkins dropped the first two sets by identical 16-25 scores, but then battled back to win the next three, 27-25, 25-20 and 15-7.

“We got down early but we fought back against a good Preston team,” coach Penny Crawford said. “It was an all-around team effort. And now we’ve got those first-game jitters out of our systems.”

Samantha “Sam” Price had 7 ace serves, 7 kills and 2 solo blocks for Elkins. Laria Rush added 4 ace serves, while Jaide Elbon had 6 kills and 2 solo blocks.

Jordan Phillips racked up 6 kills for the Lady Tigers, while Ally Hammond also had 6 kills and Alisha Arbogast added 8 set assists.

Elkins will return to the court at 6 p.m. Tuesday when they host Liberty (Harrison).
