PBHS Colts volleyball sees success

PHILIPPI — The Lady Colts capped off an 8-2 week after taking 4 out of 5 match victories at home during a Class AA sectional seeding tournament hosted at Philip Barbour High School.

Earlier in the week, they were at Parkersburg and then in Fairmont.

With a best 2 out of 3 format Saturday, PB started with decisive back-to-back winning scores of 25-8 over Keyser. The Potomac Valley Conference fired back at the Big Ten hosts, as the Frankfort Falcons tamed the Colts with 25-17 and 25-19 decisions. Philip Barbour handled Berkeley Springs 25-13 and 25-6, before besting Petersburg 25-15 and 25-17. Grafton also fell victim to the defending Class AA champions, 25-8 and 25-7.

“It was a long week for sure,” PBHS head coach Heather Halfin said. “We had a really exciting game with Parkersburg, and I saw glimpses of the greatness that I know we have. We got fired up to play section rival Frankfort, but got a few points down and beat ourselves.

“I’m hoping we got some much-needed rest, and that the girls are ready to get back to work this week,” Halfin added.

Colby Nestor racked up 25 service points against the Golden Tornado of Keyser to equal 50 percent of PB’s scoring in the match. Jyra Casto jumped to the net for 7 kills and 5 blocks, while Maddy Jones nabbed 6 digs.

Senior Maddi Carpenter continued to exhibit her main role by averaging 16 assists per match on Saturday. She also dropped in at least 23 points from the service line, including 9 aces. Kilea Payne was all over the place at the Colts’ Corral by keeping things alive with 21 digs. Payne also wrangled in 27 service points that included 6 aces. Jenna Brown notched 12 points and 2 ace serves.

McKenzie Carpenter continued her junior year campaign for PBHS with 33 kill shots and 14 blocks. Carpenter surpassed a varsity career milestone earlier in Parkersburg by dialing up and getting into the 1,000 kill shots club for Philip Barbour’s volleyball program.

The last person in school history to achieve such a mark while timing the difficult and fast-paced sport of volleyball when the Lady Colts are at the net was Nikki Shriver. Last week alone, Carpenter connected on 85 kill shot attempts.

Meanwhile, Philip Barbour junior Jyra Casto provided 36 blocks along the wire as PB split with Ripley and the Lady Big Reds in Parkersburg, swept a Big 10 Conference quad-meet at Fairmont Senior on Thursday, and helped the Colts defend home court Saturday.

Philip Barbour will be on the road again Wednesday near Charleston at St. Albans High School.
