ELKINS — Class AA No. 1 ranked Fairmont Senior came into Elkins Thursday and took a 2-1 victory, but EHS coach Michael Sfameni says he’s proud of the effort his team showed on the soccer field.

“There’s a reason why they’re 10-0,” Sfameni said. “They’re the best team we’ve played all year, obviously. Tonight, with ours, makes four goals scored on them in 10 games. It’s not because they have such a tremendous keeper. Like for us, for example, we have a heck of a keeper. They have such a good offense and such a good midfield, they score and then pack their defense in. You can’t get in, not at all …

“But I couldn’t be any happier. We had a couple of missed opportunities where we could have tied it up,” he said. “That’s a top-notch team. For us to basically play right there with them for 80 minutes, that says something. I think if we keep doing what we’re doing and we keep playing our game, good things will follow.”

Both teams battled back and fourth for the first 5 minutes of the contest. However, the Polar Bears got a break away and drew a foul in the box and was awarded a penalty kick, which they made. Later, the Tigers found the back of the net when Caleb Shipley fed a pass to Jared Parsons for a goal to tie the game 1-1. Less than 30 seconds later, Fairmont Senior stormed back up the field and matched the effort to make the score 2-1 at the half. Both teams battled to a stalemate in the second half, giving FSHS the victory.

Elkins (6-2-2) is set to host Robert C. Bryd on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
