Tucker golfers win at Canaan

CANAAN — Easton Snyder was the top golfer for the Tucker County Mountain Lions Thursday as the team earned a victory over Petersburg and Tygarts Valley at the Canaan Valley Golf Course in the regular season finale.

“The team played well for their final regular season match,” TCHS coach Sam Goughnour said. “Five scores in the 40’s was a great way to end the season at Canaan. The course was in great shape tonight and Petersburg gave us a run for it.

“I’m anxious to see if the kids can continue these scores at Regionals on Monday for 18 holes. With a chance of going to states, I know they’ll be a little more nervous too. Ten teams will be represented at the Tygart Lake Golf Course and I think the two spots for states could go to any of six of those teams. It should be a close match and we will see some great competition,” he added.

Snyder led TCHS with 40 strokes for the 9-hole competition. Teammate Carleigh Bolyard was just off the pace with 41 strokes, while Connor Nestor notched a 44 and Holden Young shot a 48. Myles Paugh, 49 strokes, Nathan Dearborn, 51 strokes, John Anderson, 54 strokes, and Wyatt Betler, 56 strokes, also shot for the Mountain Lions but didn’t factor into the team’s totals.

The Mountain Lions combined for 173 strokes to edge past Petersburg with 175 strokes. Tygarts Valley finished in third place with a 190 strokes.

Petersburg’s Nick Fleming captured the low medal with 37 strokes. Lucas Berg, 40 strokes, Dakota Parsons, 46 strokes, and Jeb Kuykendall, 55 strokes, rounded out the scoring for the Vikings.

Andrew Holbrook set the pace for the Bulldogs with 40 strokes. Wade Staten, 47 strokes, Mackenzie Staten, 48 strokes, and Cole Arbogast, 55 strokes, accounted for the team total.

Liam Depp, 56 strokes, and Bradon Bell, 60 strokes, also shot for TVHS.

Tucker County and Tygarts Valley are set to return to action on Monday for the Class A Regional golf tournament at Tygart Lake Golf Course in Grafton.

Tee time for the tournament is set for 10 a.m.
