TVMS notches victory

MILL CREEK — Tight end Brandon Bennett scored 3 touchdowns Wednesday to help Tygarts Valley Middle School engineer a come-from-behind victory over Pendleton County, 28-26.

“It was a great ball game,” TVMS coach Adam Smith said. “The kids just came out and dominated on defense in the second half. The defense really won the game for us. We held them scoreless in the second half and outscored them 20-0 to earn the win.”

Pendleton County controlled the first half, taking a 26-8 advantage into the locker room at the intermission. However, the second half was a much different story.

TVMS quarterback Garrett Gibson found Bennett three times through the air for touchdowns and running back Dimitri Fountas notched his second two-point conversion of the day to help overcome the deficit. Bennett nearly had a fourth TD, but fumbled on the 1-yard line. The stingy Bulldog defense also held PCMS scoreless in the second half.

Through the air, Gibson completed 4 of 10 passes for 161 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran the ball 3 times for 20 yards and a score. Fountas carried the ball 21 times for 129 yards rushing and 2 two-point conversions. Bennett finished the day with 4 catches for 161 yards and 3 TDs.

Defensively, Trenton Shreve led the Bulldogs with 5 tackles. Gibson and Bennett notched 4 tackles each, while Ian Maxwell and Xavier Lanham both recorded 3 tackles each and Noah Armstrong had 2 tackles. Lanham and Armstrong both had sacks in the game and Riley Tackett and Eli Smith pulled down interceptions.

TVMS (1-1) returns to action next Thursday when the team travels to Gilmer County.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
