EHS Tigers to face South Harrison

ELKINS — The No. 1 seeded Elkins Tigers are focused and ready to begin their quest for the Class AA/A Region 2 Section 2 championship tonight as the No. 4 seeded South Harrison Hawks visit for the semi-final round of the tournament. Game time is set for 7:45 p.m.

“Practice went good today,” EHS coach Michael Sfameni said. “We just worked on little things, some smaller drills. We did some small scrimmages. I told them today, ‘the regular season is over, so we’re going to build up from here on out.’ It’s a different mentality now. It’s do or die. If we lose, that’s it. I think they understood. They were very focused, especially toward the end of practice. We were really doing well in the scrimmages. I think we’ll be fine.”

The Tigers finished the regular season with 9 wins, 6 losses and 2 ties. The team has 22 players on the roster including seniors Camden Martin, Jared Parsons, Ethan Sutton, Brodie Healy and Benjamin Jones.

Other key starters include Devan Fletcher, Chris Kiess, Caleb Shipley and Liam Gongola. Goal keepers Greyson Howell and Justin Parsons will split time in the net.

Elkins defeated South Harrison in week 2 of the regular season, 8-2. In that game, Fletcher, Jared Parsons and Mike DiBacco scored 2 goals each for the Tigers, while Sutton and Shipley added the other goals. Justin Parsons, Jared Parsons and Shipley recorded 2 assists each and Eli Mullennex and DiBacco tallied 1 assist each.

EHS goal keeper Anthony Jones registered 4 saves, before giving way to Justin Parsons, who notched 3 saves. South Harrison scored both its goals on penalty kicks.

“The guys are focused and ready to get at it,” Sfameni said. “I told them, ‘Nothing is different. Don’t treat this any different. We’ve played them before and we know what to expect.’ We’ve just got to go in and play our game.”

South Harrison defeated No. 5 seed Pendleton County, 7-2, on Monday in the opening round of the sectional tournament.

The winner will advance to the Region 2 Section 2 Championship game on Saturday.
