Elkins blanks Philip Barbour, 5-0

The Inter-Mountain photos by Logan Comer Elkins High School’s Maiju Hyvarinen, No. 10, scores one of her three goals Monday. Her hat trick helped the Lady Tigers down Philip Barbour in sectional tournament action.

ELKINS — Maiju Hyvarinen racked up 3 goals Monday as No. 1 seed Elkins defeated No. 4 seed Philip Barbour, 5-0, in the first round of the Class AA/A Region 2 Section 2 Tournament.

“We scored 15 seconds into the game, so it was good to get started off like that,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said. “We put a lot of emphasis on scoring early.

“We had a good win against Philip Barbour last week, but we had to make sure we came out with a lot of intensity from the beginning and not give the other team hope or drag the game out,” he said.

“It was great to see us get a good look early and finish it. We kept kinda getting a few more from there. It gave us confidence right from the start.”

Hyvarinen got the scoring started quickly, beating the PB goalie 15 seconds into the contest.

Less than 3 minutes later, Hyvarinen found the back of the net again to put EHS up 2-0.

The Lady Tigers continued to add on the insurance points when Rachel Phillips scored at the 14 minute mark. EHS was up 3-0 at the half.

After the intermission, Sofia Triplett got in the scoring column with a goal at the 5 minute mark.

Hyvarinen later closed out the scoring to complete her hat trick at the 28 minute mark to make the final 5-0.

The Lady Tigers (14-5-1) are set to host the winner of the Lewis County/South Harrison game on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. for the sectional championship.

The winner will move on to the Region 2 Championship game next week.
