Lady Tigers to face Lewis

ELKINS — The Lady Tigers are set to square off against Lewis County tonight for the Class AA/A Region 2 Section 2 Championship. Game time is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. in Elkins.

“Practice today was very similar to what we’ve had all year long,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said, Tuesday evening. “Nothing has really changed. The girls are upbeat and confident in what they need to do. We’ve been in this situation before and we played Lewis County this year, once before. They’re a very good team. When we played them earlier it was a 3-2 game. It was very physical, probably the most physical game we played all year. We know what to expect and we know what they’re going to bring, so it will be an interesting matchup.”

On Monday, The Lady Tigers (14-5-1) blanked Philip Barbour, 5-0, in the opening round of the tournament. In that game, Maiju Hyvarinen racked up 3 goals for Elkins.

Hyvarinen got the scoring started quick, beating the PB goalie 15 seconds into the game. Less than 3 minutes later, Hyvarinen found the back of the net again to put EHS up 2-0. The Lady Tigers continued to add on the insurance points when Rachel Phillips scored at the 14 minute mark. EHS remained up 3-0 at the half.

After the intermission, Sofia Triplett got in the scoring column with a goal at the 5 minute mark. Hyvarinen later closed out the scoring with a hat trick at the 28 minute mark to make the final 5-0.

Lewis County (11-8-1) also earned a victory on Monday, defeating South Harrison, 3-0, in opening round action.

During the regular season, Elkins edged Lewis County, 3-2, on Sept. 28. In that game, Elkins went up 1-0 at about 14 minutes into the contest when Isabella Karlen scored on a header from a corner kick. Caitlyn Weese notched an assist on the play. The Lady Tigers took a 2 goal advantage less than 4 minutes later when Triplett drove the ball into the back of the net. Lewis County answered at the 17 minute mark to make the score 2-1 at the half.

At 11:30 into the second half, the Minutemaids tied the contest, 2-2, on a free kick from about 30 yards out. Elkins solidified the victory at the 19 minute mark when Nonee High finished a header off a corner kick to make the score 3-1. Weese recorded her second assist of the evening on the play.

The Lady Tigers held a 14-4 shots advantage and edged LCHS, 5-2, on corner kicks. EHS goalie Taylor Philips made 4 stops in the contest.

The winner of today’s contest will claim the sectional championship and move on to the Region 2 Championship game next week.
