’Cats open with a loss

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Pendleton County opened the season with a loss on Monday, but coach Ryan Lambert expects the team to achieve better results as the season moves forward.

The Wildcats fell to Turner Ashby High School, 50-43, in non-conference basketball action.

“We struggled in our zone offense,” PCHS coach Ryan Lambert said. “We just could not get into the flow of the game, the first half or the second half.

“We’re a young team and it showed a lot tonight,” he said. “It showed with defensive breakdowns and it also showed on the offensive side.

“Not necessarily selfish ball, but just individuals trying to get it done on the offensive end and the defensive end, which you will have with a young team.

“Moving forward, we can build on what we did like and go back to the gym and get better,” Lambert said.

Marcus Sites led Pendleton County with 10 points.

Laird Sweet, Ridge Liggett and Josh Alt contributed 8 points each for the Wildcats.

For Turner Ashby, Eli Roeschley was the game’s leading scorer with 15 points, while teammate Orion Angelotulous tallied 9 points.

“They are a bigger school and a tough opponent,” Lambert said.

“We got our feet wet,” he said. “It was a good game for us to build on moving forward.”

Pendleton County (0-1) is set to return to action today to host Harman.

The girls varsity teams will square off at 6 p.m. tonight and the boys varsity teams will play afterward, at approximately 7:30 p.m.
