Pocahontas County girls upend Tygarts Valley
MILL CREEK — Kira Bircher fired up a career-high 25 points Wednesday, as Pocahontas County cruised past Tygarts Valley, 61-25, in non-conference basketball action.
Along with her 25 points, Bircher dished out 5 assists and nabbed 4 steals. Also for the Lady Warriors, Laila Calhoun tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Other key performances included Brianna Hefner, 6 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists, Charity Warder, 6 points, Aliza Carr and Sage McLaughlin, 4 points each, and Alexa Taylor and Jerica Reed, 2 points each.
For the Lady Bulldogs, senior Kelsey Armstrong set the pace with 6 points. Emily Ball chipped in 5 points and Abby Harris added 4 points to the effort. Abby Lanham, Kaylee Halterman, Kaleah Pritt, Madison Knight and Tatum Wamsley scored 2 points each.
PCHS held a 40-24 advantage in rebounds and committed 26 turnovers, compared to TVHS’ 29 turnovers.
In junior varsity action, PCHS won 38-34. Destiny Vandeavender was the game’s top scorer with 16 points, while teammate Kierstin Taylor scored 10 points. For TVHS, Claire Smith recorded 12 points and Kaylee Halterman scored 8 points.
Pocahontas County (4-1) is set to play in the Rogers Oil Classic on Friday and Saturday in Summers County. The team will face Champmanville on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Tygarts Valley (1-4) is set to host Union on Friday. Girls varsity action is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. and the boys varsity game will follow.
