Tigers top Preston County

KINGWOOD — Elliot White nearly set the net on fire Wednesday, burning the Knights for 30 points, as Elkins downed Preston County, 65-49, in Big 10 Conference action.

“We came out a little bit flat in the first half,” EHS coach Brandon Simmons said. “We had a long break after the Morgantown loss. We watched the film on Monday, practice was canceled on Tuesday due to inclement weather, and that was our first outing on the court in a few days.

“We were sloppy to start out. We responded in the second half and really turned it on. We dropped 40 (points) in the second half. That’s putting in some work. We stepped up the defensive pressure in the second half and we got a lot more turnovers. We got the momentum and started to score the ball a little bit better.”

White was the game’s top scorer with 30 points, including a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Donovan Wiles also topped double digits in scoring with 16 points for EHS. Matt Gainer, 8 points, Read Schumacher, 7 points and Luke Swecker, 4 points, rounded out the scoring for the Tigers.

Jake Livingood and Andrew Lantz scored 16 points each for PCHS.

Elkins fell behind 11-8 after the first quarter, but managed a 17-10 advantage in the second stanza to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Tigers scored 20 points in both the third and fourth quarters to secure the victory.

Elkins (3-1) is set to travel to Liberty on Friday. The freshman squads will tipoff at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

There will be no junior varsity contest
