B-UHS notches 14th victory
TENNERTON — Although Philip Barbour etched out a 15-12 first quarter win Thursday, Class AAA No. 1 Buckhannon-Upshur fired back to take control for a 62-45 Big Conference win over the visiting Lady Colts.
Buckhannon (14-1) is currently on a nine-game winning streak. The Colts fell to 9-6.
“We came out a little uninspired,” B-UHS coach Jeremy Maxwell said. “We caught a spark later, and we know we are going to get everyone’s best shot.”
Buckhannon senior Lauren Bennett with 27 points, and fellow 12th-grader Hanna McClung with 25, paced the Lady Bucs in the scoring column. Bennett completed a double-double while adding 10 rebounds and 5 steals.
McClung rang in with a 4 of 9 from three-point range, shot 6 of 8 from 2 point territory, was a perfect 4 out of 4 from the foul line, and dished out 5 assists and stole the ball 2 times for B-UHS.
The Lady Buccaneers created the damage needed in the second quarter, putting up 19 points and holding PBHS to only 2, creating a 31-17 buffer never to be surrendered. Buckhannon was ahead 51-32 when the fourth and final frame began.
Alli Robinson rounded out the Bucs’ production with 8 points, 3 rebounds and 2 takeaways.
Micah Harris came off the bench and did all she could for the Lady Colts with 16 points after warming up the basket with 4 three-pointers on her way to 16 points and 4 rebounds. Fellow junior McKenzie Carpenter picked up 9 board and 7 points for Philip Barbour.
Buckhannon-Upshur is slated to be at Lincoln on Saturday, while PB is scheduled to host Robert C. Byrd on Monday.
