Elkins Middle upsets Philippi

ELKINS — Austin Harris and David Gongola both reached double digits in scoring Thursday, as Elkins Middle School nipped Philippi, 46-44, in boys varsity basketball.

“It was a blast,” EMS coach Doug Boggs said. “The band performed tonight. Any of the home games when the band performs, it’s that much more fun. The band brings a lot of fans and people to watch the game. It takes it to a different level of excitement. I love it.”

Harris and Gongola recorded 11 points each for Elkins. Charlie Smoak also played well, contributing 9 points for the Hornets. Jay Crockett also played an instrumental role in the defense, pulling down numerous rebounds.

For Philippi, Jesiah Matlick and Donovan Thomas scored 12 points each.

“We played Philippi in the Christmas Tournament at Tygarts Valley a few weeks ago and they beat us by 28 points,” Boggs said. “That makes you so proud of your kids. When you face a team that you’ve just lost to by 28, and you come out and beat them. I couldn’t be more proud of these kids. There’s no quit in them. Every single game, they’re getting better. This is when it’s fun, when you start seeing the fruits of your labor. All the hard work is starting to pay off.”

The Elkins junior varsity team also picked up a victory over the PMS JVs, 54-25. The victory extended the EMS JV’s unbeaten streak to 11 games.

Elkins (2-9) is set to return to action on Monday at home against Taylor County. JV action is set for 6 p.m. and the varsity game will follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
