EMS cheer squad honored
ELKINS — The Elkins Middle School Cheerleading Squad, better known to some as “The Lucky 13,” earned honors at a recent competition.
Competing with six teams in their division at the East Fairmont Cheer Invitational last weekend, EMS took home a number of awards, in team and individual categories.
The squad earned first place in the sideline cheer portion of the competition and third place in overall routine.
Head coach Kelly Vandevender said approximately 50 cheerleaders participated in the individual tumbling category.
Eighth-grader Mackenzie Childers placed eighth; Ruby Jackson placed fifth, Juliet Kubichek placed sixth; and Zayah Hedrick placed seventh.
“We have done so well in the tumbling competition — every girl that we had participating placed,” Vandevender said.
In addition, members of the EMS squad participated, along with approximately 20 other cheerleaders, in the individual jump competition.
Eighth-grader Tessa Martin placed third while classmate McKenzie Childers placed sixth in this competition.
In addition to competing in competitions, the squad also supports other EMS athletic teams throughout the year as they cheer for football, basketball and soccer games.
The team is scheduled to compete in another cheerleading competition at Liberty High School in February.
