Lady Bucs drop Morgantown

TENNERTON — Class AAA Big 10 Conference based Buckhannon-Upshur captured a 63-55 win over sectional opponent Morgantown Monday to further the Lady Bucs’ post-season positioning while also being ranked No. 1 in AAA, and eyeing a fourth straight run at the playoffs while returning as AAA runner-up from a year ago.

“It’s always a tough game against Morgantown,” B-UHS coach Jeremy Maxwell said. “We hit a 12-0 run to start the fourth, and a couple senior leaders stepped up to make the plays necessary.”

The squads traded leads in the first half with Morgantown up 17-14 after the first quarter, and B-U leading 34-31 at the half. The visiting Lady Mohigans entered the fourth frame ahead with a 45-41 advantage.

After the Lady Bucs peppered MHS, 22-10, in the fourth, B-U came out on top for the victory.

Lauren Bennett was nearly lights-out from behind the arc while draining 5 of 6 from 3-point range at home. Bennett totaled 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Hanna McClung was a near perfect from the free-throw line, making 9 out of 10 opportunities on her way to a team-high 19 points. She added additional contributions with 6 assists, 4 boards and 3 takeaways.

Mckinley Guadet with 10 points, 4 assists and 3 steals joined Alli Robinson to round things out as Robinson garnered 8 points, 4 steals and 3 rebounds for the B-UHS effort.

Buckhannon will resume play when hosting Philip Barbour on Thursday.
