Lady Hornets fall

GRAFTON — Eight Lady Hornets tallied points in the stat book Monday, but it didn’t total enough to take down Taylor County in middle school varsity basketball action. EMS lost the contest, 31-17.

“The girls played tough,” EMS coach Clint Bennett said. “They played hard. We got down 12-0 at the start. We settled down after that and competed. The 12 points at the start were just too much to overcome at the beginning. They battled and played hard.”

Aaliah Hogue was the leading scorer for EMS with 3 points. Anna Belan, Emily Arbogast, Hannah Davis, Bella Schumate, Alexa Triplett, Vanessa Harner and Callie Loftis all scored 2 points each.

Meredith Maier led the way for TCMS with 7 points and teammate Sidney Friend scored 6 points.

In the junior varsity contest, Elkins won 19-13 to extend their record to 11-2. Jaylen Florence was the top scorer with 8 points. Other key contributors included: Autumn Lane, 4 points; Loftis, 3 points; and Kenzie Phillips and Laney Fletcher, 2 points each.

“The JV’s played well,” Bennett said. “They played good man-to-man defense, as always. They did a much better job against the press and being patient on offense. It was a good team win.”

The Lady Hornets (1-10) are set to host Tucker County today. The junior varsity game tips off at 6 p.m. and the varsity contest will begin at 7:30 p.m.
