Petersburg grabs win on the road in AA

GRAFTON — Petersburg High School freshman Kayla Lantz lifted the Lady Vikings to victory Monday with a buzzer-beater shot at the end of regulation to help the visitors grab a 60-58, come-from-behind win over Grafton in Class AA non-conference action.

Grafton senior Allison Peters did all she could do with a game-high 28 points to help the Lady Bearcats lead by 10 points at halftime, and mostly throughout the contest.

“It was a pretty wild one; we were behind for the whole time almost,” PHS coach John Webster said. “We didn’t get our first lead until under a minute left in the game. We got it cut to 10 at halftime, and had a good third quarter.”

The Vikes headed to the halftime locker room trailing 33-23. A resilient 18-9 win by Petersburg during the third frame put the visitors back in business to only trail 42-41 with 8 minutes left in regulation.

“We actually took the first lead of the game for us with less than a minute to go,” Webster said. “Ally Peters, who scores a lot of points for them, made a free-throw with about 15 seconds left on the clock to tie it up.

“We came down and made a shot at the buzzer to win it,” he said.

Lantz and Casey Watts led Petersburg with 11 each in the scoring column. Hayley Ours and Jenna Burgess ran the court for 10 points each. Carley Turner chipped in with 5 on the score sheet.

Next up on the schedule for Petersburg (5-9) will be a road game at Pendleton County Wednesday to resume PVC matters.
