HAMBLETON — The Tucker County Lady Mountain Lions topped the Pocahontas County Lady Warriors, 63-34, on Thursday, despite losing leading scorer Sydney Nestor to a leg injury in the first quarter.

The 20-1 Mountain Lions lost Nestor during a scramble for the ball in the first quarter. Five Lady Mountain Lions stepped up and scored in double figures during the win. Sophomore Terra Kuhn and junior Mckinley Murphy each netted 13. Junior Kelcee James scored 11 and seniors Sydney Moore and Cecily Strawderman each chipped in 10 points.

“It was a slow first half,” Tucker coach Dave Helmick said. “Pocahontas came out and played well. They’re a good team. They matched our energy. We managed to get a good lead in the second quarter and built from there.”

The Lady Mountain Lions led the game 8-3 after the first quarter and closed the second on an 11-0 run to have a 27-16 lead at halftime. Tucker continued their large runs and finished the third quarter outscoring Pocahontas 21-10. The Lady Mountain Lions added another 15 in the final stanza, bringing the final score to 63-34.

Lady Warrior junior Brianna Hefner set a personal season high for scoring, netting 12 points.

Sophomores Kira Bircher and Charity Warder each added 8 points for Pocahontas. Hefner brought down 5 rebounds and Bircher grabbed 9.

The Lady Warriors outrebounded Tucker 31-29. The Lady Mountain Lions won the turnover battle 23-18.

Nestor netted 2 points before suffering the injury. On Monday, Nestor set the all-time scoring record for Tucker County High School basketball in a 73-23 win over East Hardy.

Starting every game since she was a freshman, Nestor broke the previous record of 1,634 in the third quarter. Nestor with 1,634 points beat the previous record of 1,626 points set in 2008 by L.J. Gravelle.

The Lady Mountain Lions will take the court at home today to face Wheeling Central today at 7:30 p.m. Wheeling Central handed the Lady Mountain Lions their only loss of the season on Jan. 31 with a final score of 65-44.

Pocahontas will host Webster County in the first round of the sectional tournament at 7 p.m. Monday.
