Elkins downs PBHS

ELKINS — The Tigers’ bats came alive Saturday, as Elkins defeated Philip Barbour 9-6 in Big 10 Conference baseball action.

“They came out in the third inning and really stepped it up,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “The first batter came up and drew a walk and then we bunted a couple of times to move the runners. We bunted successfully 2 out of 3 times, one was a sacrifice that got a run in. We put a little bit of pressure on their defense in that inning. We scored 7 runs. So we were up 7-0. I think the guys kinda relaxed a little bit. We had a couple errors and that allowed Philip Barbour to get back in the game a little bit. That’s why the score ended up to be 9 to 6.”

Read Schumacher earned the victory on the mound for the Tigers. He went 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 6 batters. Jeremy Cogar tossed 3 innings of relief, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits.

Gauge Bibey was cited with the loss for the Colts. He surrendered 5 runs on 2 hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Nate Baldwin and Tanner Corder closed out the contest for PBHS.

Matthew Gainer set the pace at the plate for Elkins. He went 2 for 3 with a sacrifice, a double, a home run, 2 RBIs and a run scored. Other top performances included: Cogar, 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI; Russell Shiflett, 1 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored; Cole Crumm, 1 for 1 with a sacrifice, 2 RBIs, 1 walk; Luke Swecker, 2 for 2, 1 run; Nathan Cooper, 0 for 0 with 2 runs and 2 walks.

For the Colts, David Shriver went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Chase Collier finished the day 2 for 4 with 1 run, while Baldwin went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

The Tigers (6-7) are scheduled to travel to Buckhannon-Upshur today at 5 p.m.

PBHS is set to host Lewis County today at 4:30 p.m.
