Elkins’ Gainer throws no-no

CLARKSBURG — Matthew Gainer tossed a no-hitter against Robert C. Bryd Thursday, as the Elkins Tigers defeated the Eagles, 7-0, in Big 10 Conference action.

“Matt (Gainer) did a great job, pitching 7 no-hit innings,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “He pitched really well. It was cold. He just fought through it and did really well.

“The guys are really starting to hit the ball well, down through the lineup. They are taking much better approaches at the plate now that we’ve got a few games under our belts,” he said.

“I’m pleased with the effort. The attitudes are great on the team. We’re looking forward to playing everyday next week.”

Gainer earned the victory on the mound. In 7 innings of work, he struck out 9 batters and walked 2 others.

At the plate, Gainer went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored.

Jesse Williams led the Tigers’ offense, going 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a double.

Other notable performances included: Joseph Schmidlen, 2 for 2 with 2 walks and 3 runs scored; Read Schumacher, 1 for 3 with 2 runs; Ben McDonald, 1 for 2 with a double, a walk, a sacrifice and 2 RBIs; and Russell Shiflett, 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.

J.T. Sandy recorded the loss for RCB. He logged 4 innings, surrendering 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks.

Elkins (3-3) is scheduled to return to action on Monday when the team travels to Grafton.

Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. with a junior varsity contest to follow.
