JV Tournament slated in Elkins

ELKINS — Baseball fans from across the region are hoping for nice weather this weekend, as the 2018 High School Phares Memorial Junior Varsity Tournament is scheduled to take place in Elkins.

“These JV teams work really hard,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “They work all year. They start practice at the same time. They start in February and sometimes, because of the rain and the snow, their games get pushed to the side so that the varsity games can get played. I think it’s going to be a good weekend to showcase the upcoming talent that the schools in the local area have.”

Five junior varsity squads from the area will be competing in the tourney. Teams participating include Elkins, Philip Barbour, Lewis County, Buckhannon-Upshur and Preston County high schools. Games will be hosted at both Elkins High School and the Robin Harvey Memorial Field at Bluegrass Park.

“I feel like the JV program at Elkins High School is the future of our baseball program,” Crumm said. “For us to develop those kids, they’ve got to see playing time so that in the future our program can continue to succeed. We try to take advantage of every opportunity we can to get those guys game experience.”

On Friday at the Elkins High School field, EHS will take on Preston at 4 p.m. Preston will then play B-UHS at 6:15 p.m. and the day will close out with EHS facing B-UHS at 8:30. Over at RHMF on Friday, PB and Lewis County will face off in a double header beginning at 6:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the teams will be seeded based on performance for a single elimination tournament beginning at 10 a.m. at RHMF and concluding with the championship at 3 p.m. at EHS.

A dedication ceremony will also be hosted on Saturday at EHS for the Phares Memorial Batting Cage at 12:15 p.m.
