Lady Colts go 2-2 in Keyser tournament

KEYSER — Philip Barbour went winless Friday in the Ron Mathias Memorial Tournament at Keyser High School.

The Colts fell, 4-3, against Hope for Hyndman Charter School. Hosting Keyser blanked PBHS, 11-0, in the night cap.

Saturday’s tournament results were a little more favorable for Philip Barbour as they erased a losing record, leaving Mineral County at 6-5.

With a pair of come-from-behind victories, the Lady Colts bested Preston by a final tally of 9-7, and fended off another Big 10 Conference rival, Grafton, with a 5-2 tally.

Preston had PB trailing by 2 runs with a 7-5 lead to start the sixth inning. Philip Barbour tied the contest up, and Marlee Mincey delivered with a 2-run double to put the Colts on top for good.

Mincey also went 4 innings on the hill for PBHS. Mincey notched 3 strikeouts, 3 earned runs and 4 hits, and walked 5.

Emma Kennedy paced PB at the plate with 2 triples and 3 runs batted in.

Destiny Blake and Shelby Collins also notched RBIs for the Colts. Senior Sarah Jones took a hit by pitch that advanced her to first base to be a base runner for PBHS.

Jones recorded 2 RBI after hitting 1-3 in the win over Grafton.

The Lady Bearcats grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, but Philip Barbour went up, 3-2, in the third.

Quality pitching and good defense held Grafton scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Amanda Reed picked up the complete game win in the pitcher’s circle. She threw 6 strikeouts, 4 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings’ work.

Jyra Casto and Shelby Collins collected 2 hits each, while Mincey, Reed and Kennedy all had an RBI.
