Lady Colts go 3-0 in tourney

The Inter-Mountain photos by Tony Baisi PBHS sophomore Emma Kennedy hit a grand slam Saturday to seal the Lady Colts' come-from-behind win over Webster County.

GRAFTON — Philip Barbour went undefeated in tournament play Saturday by sweeping Grafton, Preston and Webster at Grafton High School.

The Lady Colts also set a new single-season wins mark of 9, after having tied the previous record of 7.

Facing a 3-1 deficit before the bottom side of the fifth inning, and trailing for the first time all day in the final tournament game against Webster County High School, PB rattled off a 9-6 come-from-behind win over the Highlanders.

The Lady Colts caught 2-out fever in the fifth frame. Shelby Collins plated Erica Simons with an RBI double to knot the game up at 4-all.

Sarah Jones then cracked an RBI triple to bring Collins home for a lasting 5-4 lead by PBHS.

Philip Barbour defeated Grafton, Preston County and Webster County at Grafton High School Saturday.

Philip Barbour sophomore Emma Kennedy put up 4 insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with a grand slam home run, extending the Colts’ lead out to 9-4.

It wasn’t Kennedy’s first shot over the fence at GHS this year, and was at least her fifth homer of the season.

“We could be a good high school softball team if we could play an error free game,” PBHS coach Rob Simon said. “Our bats have carried us to victories, but like in the Webster Springs game, we had 2 first inning errors on routine plays and gave up 3 runs.

“We made solid contact with the ball, but we had the ‘at thems’, and Webster made plays on those balls. Finally we had some hits that found a place to land out of reach of their fielders and got base runners aboard,” said Simon. “My standout sophomore finally got her swing under control and came through with a grand slam late in the game.

“Our starting pitcher exhausted her 14-inning limit for the day, and I couldn’t be more happier with Jess Metheney for coming in and getting the save in the final two innings. We are young and learning,” Simon added.

Amanda Reed went 5 innings on the mound for a no decision. She struck out 5, walked 2 and allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits. Metheney held down the fort over the final pair of frames to get the win for PB by only walking 1 batter, and containing Webster to 4 hits and 2 runs.

Having the next closest travel time to Grafton out of those in attendance Saturday, other than the Lady Bearcats themselves, Philip Barbour arrived early.

The Colts and GHS threw down first in a 9 a.m. start time as the Big 10 Conference rivals got things underway just several feet away from the Tygart River as game No. 1 of the tournament ensued.

A couple of bounces in the Colts’ favor opened up a 5-1 lead for PB after one frame squared away in the books.

The visitors kept the Bearcats at arm’s length, going on for a 13-8 victory over the hosts.

Kennedy, with a double and 4 RBIs posted on the stat sheet, and Collins’ belting in 4 runs as well, set the pace for the Colts’ offense against Grafton.

Katey Gallo chipped in with 2 RBIs for Philip Barbour.

Reed went the distance for the win in the pitchers’ circle over 7 innings’ work.

She allowed 11 hits and 2 earned runs, while sending 4 back to the dugout on strikeouts.

The Big 10 Preston County Lady Knights took some lumps along the way. Philip Barbour watched a slower pitch well enough to clobber PHS, 20-2, in a 4 p.m. contest.

It wasn’t the first time this year that PB outscored Preston well enough to end the game early.

Lewis County is slated to be at the Colts’ Corral today as PBHS (9-6) will get back into Big 10 action.

The LCHS Minutemaids boasted an 11-1 resume last Friday, before taking on 20-0 Herbert Hoover High School over the weekend.
