Lady Vikings sail past Lady Colts

GRAFTON — Petersburg drove from Grant County to Grafton Wednesday, and played well at Grafton High School to take a 16-1 win over Class AA sectional opponent Philip Barbour after 3 innings.

The Lady Vikings put up 10 runs in the top side of the first inning, 3 more in the second, and their final 3 in the third. Philip Barbour picked up their lone run in the bottom of the first.

Carley Cooper pitched the win for Petersburg by fanning 7 batters, and only allowing 1 run, 1 hit and 1 walk.

Philip Barbour freshman Amanda Reed took some ninth-grade knocks on the hill by surrendering 13 runs and 14 hits during the loss.

Petersburg had five different players hitting doubles from their lineup, including Marissa Earle, McKenzie Weasenforth, Jenna Burgess, Hannah Smith and Karlee Vance.

Maddy Jones recorded PB’s lone hit with a double, and scored a run for the Colts.

Katie Koontz and Halie Ours each dinged out triples for the Lady Vikes. Ours and Smith both notched 3 RBI.

Kerri VanMeter and Burgess helped keep the PHS bats rolling with 2 RBI each.

Petersburg (12-1) is slated for action in Moorefield Friday while taking part in the Bub Riggleman Tournament.

After missing the AA playoffs last season, Petersburg is again on the hunt for their latest invite to Vienna for a chance at a state title.

Philip Barbour (6-6) is slated for a double-header against Elkins in a Big 10 Conference scrum on the sandlot just behind Elkins Middle School today. First pitch in the Hornets’ backyard is slated for approximately 5 p.m.
