Tigers fall to B-UHS
TENNERTON — Cole Hoover drove in the winning run Monday, as Buckhannon-Upshur High School skated past Elkins, 5-4, in 8 innings of Big 10 Conference baseball action.
“It was a good game,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “We played well, and they played well. We just gave up one more run than they did. When Cogar came in, he took the loss, but he pitched well. We’re asking a lot of him. He started the game as catcher, then went to the mound.”
With the game tied in extra innings, B-U’s Alex Seech drew a walk to set the table. He later stole second and EHS loaded the bases with 2 outs. With the infield playing in, Hoover hit a shot to the shortstop but Seech made it across the plate before the Tigers could get him out.
Logan Bailey earned the victory on the mound for B-UHS. He went the distance, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits while striking out 5 and issuing 2 walks. At the plate, Bailey helped his own cause, going 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Jeremy Cogar notched the loss for EHS in relief. In 4 innings of work, he gave up 2 runs on 7 hits and struck out 1 batter. Matthew Gainer started for the Tigers before exiting after 2 innings. Gainer struck out 3 batters and gave up 2 hits. Ben McDonald took over in the third stanza and surrendered 3 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings pitched.
Read Schumacher led the way at the plate for Elkins. He finished the day 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs. McDonald and Russell Shiflett both connected for home runs, while Luke Swecker and Nathan Cooper tallied 1 run each.
For the Bucs, Alex Seech and Taylor Whitehair both went 2 for 4 with home runs. Andrew Herron and Casey Hamner collected 2 hits each, while Drew Heatherly and Logan Whitehair had 1 hit each.
