Bulldogs blast Philip Barbour in doubleheader action

MILL CREEK — The Tygarts Valley Bulldogs closed out the regular season slate Thursday with a pair of wins against the Philip Barbour Colts.

TVHS won the first game, 9-5, then topped the Colts, 10-7, in the second contest.

“It was nice to get a couple wins to get us over .500,” TVHS coach James Markley said. “We had to come back in the second game after being down early. The kids showed a lot of heart, hopefully that continues into sectionals next week. It was also a nice way for our seniors to end their regular season. Now it’s time to get ready for sectionals.”

With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game, Brett Smith lashed a 2-run single to give TVHS the lead. The Bulldogs closed out the inning with 2 more runs and added another run in the sixth stanza to insure the victory.

Logan George was credited with the win on the mound. Over the course of 7 innings, he struck out 4 batters and gave up 5 runs on 9 hits.

At the plate, Smith led the way, going 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Hunter Lanham finished the contest, 3 for 4 with 1 run and 2 RBIs, while Richie Simmons went 3 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Trent Tallman shouldered the loss for PBHS. He went 5 innings, surrendering 8 runs on 13 hits while striking out 2 and walking 6.

In the second contest, the score was tied 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning when George connected for a 3-run double to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. George finished the game 1 for 2 with 1 walk, 1 run and 3 RBIs.

Hunter Lanham earned the victory on the mound. In 3 2/3 innings of relief, he surrendered five hits and zero runs while striking out 1. Jake Tackett started on the hill for the Bulldogs. He gave up 7 runs on 7 hits and struck out 2 batters.

TVHS generated 8 hits in the game, while the Colts outpaced them with 12 hits. Lanham helped his own cause at the plate, going 2 for 4 with 1 run and 3 RBIs. Austin Simmons finished the game 2 for 3, while Austin Lanham went 1 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Gage Bibey, David Shriver, Nathan Baldwin and Alex Wilson recorded multiple hits each for the Colts. Bibey was 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI, while Baldwin and Wilson were both 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and Shriver went 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Hunter Mason also drove in a pair of runs in the contest.

The Bulldogs (12-11) are set to host Trinity on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Class A Region II Section 1 Tournament.
