EHS Tigers fall to Bridgeport
BRIDGEPORT — Nathan Cooper drove in a pair of runs Friday, but it wasn’t enough to power Elkins past Bridgeport in the Class AA Region II Section 1 Tournament. The Indians downed the Tigers, 12-2.
“Read (Schumacher) pitched well tonight,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “We got behind in the first inning, 3-0 and then Read settled in and kept them from scoring for 4 innings. Defensively, we played solid, turning a double play and successfully completing multiple run downs. We hit the ball hard tonight, just right at them several times. We played a very good game right up until the bottom of the sixth. We have to play seven solid innings to beat Bridgeport and we just didn’t do that tonight.”
Read Schumacher was cited with the loss for Elkins. He went the distance, giving up 9 runs on 9 hits while issuing 2 walks.
Senior Russell Shiflett set the tone for the Tigers’ offense, finishing the day 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Other notable performances included: Joseph Schmidlen, 1 for 3 with a sacrifice; Matthew Gainer, 2 for 3 with a double; Luke Swecker, 1 for 3 with a run scored; Cory Reed, 1 for 3; Nathan Cooper, 0 for 2 with 2 sacrifice flys and 2 RBIs.
Brayden Lesher earned the victory on the mound for the Indians. He gave up 2 runs on 7 hits.
Elkins (12-10) is set to host the winner of Robert C. Bryd versus Lincoln on Monday at 6 p.m.
RCB and LCHS are scheduled to play today in Clarksburg.
