Lady Yellow Jackets win regional bid
BLACKSVILLE — The Moorefield Lady Yellow Jackets are heading to the state tournament, after defeating Clay-Battelle 3-1 in Tuesday’s game, part of the Class A Region II Tournament.
“It was a well-played game,” said Moorefield High School assistant coach Julie Markwood. “We had to fight tooth and nail the entire seven innings. … I’m just really proud of them, that they fought really hard and never gave up.”
Moorefield scored 1 run in the third inning and so did Clay-Battelle. Moorefield’s additional 2 runs came in the sixth inning.
Markwood said Moorefield had 7 total hits and 2 errors, while Clay-Battelle had 4 hits and 2 errors.
Moorefield’s Remi Hinkle went 1-4 with 1 RBI, while Hanna Carlson was 1-2 with a double.
Anna Riggleman was 1-2 with 1 RBI and a double, while Macie Zirk was 1-2 with a double, also.
The Yellow Jackets’ pitcher was Rebeka Markwood, who gave up 4 hits and 1 run, which was an unearned run. She had 5 strikeouts and no walks.
For Clay-Battelle, pitcher Caitlyn Kassey gave up 7 hits and 3 runs, with 11 strikeouts and 6 walks.
Kassey also was her team’s lead hitter, going 2-3 with a double and a single, and she had their lone RBI.
Moorefield will move on to the state tournament next week at Jackson Park in Vienna, with games set for May 23 and 24.
