Tigers defeat Lincoln
ELKINS — The Elkins Tigers opened the Class AA Region II Section 1 Tournament on Wednesday with a 7-1 victory over Lincoln High School.
“Matthew (Gainer) pitched very well, as he has all season,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “The team continues to get better with their approaches at the plate and are doing well putting the ball in play with 2 strikes.
“It’s been good to be able to get outside and practice the last few days and we are excited to continue play in this sectional tournament with some of the best teams in the state.”
Gainer earned the victory on the mound. Over the course of 7 innings, he struck out 12 batters and gave up 2 hits, 2 walks and 1 run. Gainer also helped his own cause at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a home run.
Luke Swecker set the tone for the Elkins’ offense. He went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 1 RBI.
Other key performers for EHS included: Joseph Schmidlen, 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored; Read Schumacher, 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and 3 runs scored; Jeremy Cogar, 1 for 3 with an RBI; Nathan Cooper, 1 for 3 with a double and 1 run scored; and Cole Crumm, 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
Kobie Carpenter was saddled with the loss for the Cougars. He allowed 6 runs on 8 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Elkins (12-9) is set to travel to Bridgeport on Friday for a 6 p.m. contest in the double elimination tournament.
