Elkins stays alive in tourney, will face Tygarts Valley today

SUTTON –Elkins stayed alive in the Little League District 8 9-10 year-old All-Star tourney with a 19-9 win over Belington-Barbour County Sunday at Holly Park.

Elkins, which lost to Summersville, 7-2, in Saturday’s first game, will now face Tygarts Valley at 5:30 p.m. today in another elimination game.

Nijah Howell struck out six batters in three innings of work for Elkins in Sunday’s win, while Ryan Jones had five RBIs at the plate.

“We played a good game against Summersville,” Elkins manager Kelly Cooper said. “But we left the bases loaded three times and couldn’t get the job done.”

Tygarts Valley, which had an opening-day bye, dropped a 21-13 decision to Braxton County on Sunday.

Leading Tygarts Valley at the plate were Bryson Taylor (4 for 4 with one run scored), Jacob Wamsley (4 for 5 with two runs scored), Austin Teter (3 for 5 with three runs scored) and Adam Woods (3 for 5 with one run scored).

“We were a little nervous to start but once we got rolling things looked up,” said TV manager Josh Teter. “We just got behind early and ran out of innings.

“I’m proud of the entire team for keeping their heads up and never giving up the entire game.”

Belington-Barbour County suffered a tough 17-16 setback in extra innings in its opening game against Braxton County on Saturday.
