Squad overcomes adversity to defeat Davis Trust twice on Sunday

ELKINS — Elkins Fordland overcame adversity to capture the 2018 Elkins Elks Babe Ruth Fuzz Jones City Tournament Sunday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Fordland, which was the sixth seed in the tourney, came out of the loser’s bracket finale on Saturday and needed to beat top-seed Davis Trust Company twice on Sunday to win the title.

Fordland did just that, taking the first game, 17-2, and winning the second contest by a 5-2 count.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the deciding tilt, Fordland pushed three runs across in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good, using a lead-off double by Will Knight, a pair of errors and back-to-back RBI sacrifice flys from David Freeman and Nathan Cooper, who also had a run-producing single in a two-run fourth inning.

Tallman also lofted an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth to score James Smoak.

Freeman went the first four innings to earn the win. He gave up two runs on two hits, striking out three and walking four.

Knight, who had 18 strikeouts earlier in the tourney in a win, came on in relief to earn the save. He allowed just one hit, fanning three and walking one.

Nick Hamrick took the loss in going all seven innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Tanner Corder had a pair of hits for Fordland, scoring two runs. Knight and Nathan Cooper added doubles.

Tallman led DTC with two safeties.

In Sunday’s first game, Fordland erupted for 11 hits in cruising to the five-inning victory.

Fordland scored 13 unanswered runs after the game was deadlocked, 2-2, after two innings.

Knight had three hits, including a pair of doubles for the winners, while Corder had three RBIs and Nathan Cooper and Garrett Silvester two hits apiece.

Tallman had two hits for DTC and Cody Cooper an RBI single.

Nathan Cooper went all five innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on six hits and fanning four.

James Smoak was saddled with the loss in four innings of action.

In Saturday’s loser bracket finale, Fordland earned a trip to Sunday’s finals by defeating Citizen’s National Bank, 13-7.

Opie Dudley had three hits, including a pair of doubles, in the victory.

Owen Haddix and Austyn Fletcher had two hits each in a losing effort for CNB.

The league also announced postseason award winners following Sunday’s action.

The MVP of the league was Gage Bibey from Broughton’s Sports, the Sportsmanship Award went to Fordland’s Tanner Corder and the Most Improved Player was Citizen National Bank’s Alex Wilson.
