Belington gets dramatic victory over Craigsville

SUMMERSVILLE — The Belington-Barbour County Little League All-Stars stayed alive in the 11-12 year-old District 8 tourney with a thrilling 5-4 win over Craigsville (Nicholas County East) Sunday afternoon at Nicholas County Veterans Memorial Park.

Belington, which lost a heart-breaking 4-3 decision to Cowen in its first game on Saturday, faces Tygarts Valley at 5:30 p.m. today in another elimination game.

Down 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Belington plated three runs to earn the win on Sunday.

Nathan Bennett and Parker Herron drew walks to start the inning and moved up on a wild pitch.

Joseph Kittle then plated Bennett with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 4-3.

After Jack Wilson reached on an error with two outs, Grant Harris followed with a hit to score Herron with the tying run and Wilson was also able to cross home with the game-winning run on the play.

Belington had taken a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Kittle led off with a single and Harris drew a walk in front of Adam Bailey’s two-run single to right.

Craigsville answered with three runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.

Bailey got the win in relief of Wilson on the mound.

In Saturday afternoon’s opening game, Belington broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth when Bailey singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Cowen, however, scored twice in the home-half of the frame to take the walk-off win.

Jaiden Bailey, who had doubled, and Zach Bennett scored Belington’s two runs in the fourth.
