Elkins begins action on Sunday

ELKINS –The Elkins 9-10-year-old All-Stars will begin state tournament action Sunday in Hedgesville.

Elkins, competing in Bracket 2, has a first-round bye and faces the winner of today’s game between Jefferson and Barboursville at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hedgesville.

Games will be played at fields in Hedgesville and Martinsburg.

Teams taking part include Logan (District 2 champion), Madison (District 2 runner-up), Shady Spring (District 4 champion), Vinson (District 1 champion), South Charleston (District 3 runner-up), Central Greenbrier (District 4 runner-up), Bi-State (District 6 champion) Jefferson (District 6 runner-up), Barboursville (District 1 runner-up), Summersville (District 8 champion), Bridgeport (District 5 champion), Wesmon (District 5 runner-up) and Hurricane (District 3 champion).

Elkins earned a spot in the tournament by finishing as the District 8 runner-ups. The squad bounced back from a first-game loss to Summersville by defeating Belington-Barbour County, Tygarts Valley and Braxton County in the loser’s bracket final to secure a state spot.

Kelly Cooper serves as the Elkins manager, while Justin Stanley is the head coach and Larry Boggs is an assistant.

Team members include Brayden Biller, Dreyton Boggs, Alex Broschart, Braden Cooper, Jude Evick, Carter Gouer, Evan Hammonds, Nijah Howell, Ryan Jones, Teagan Schaefer, Owen Stanley, Drayden Wilson and Ben Wilson.

The championship is tenatively scheduled for Thursday. The winner advances to the Tournament of Champions to be held later this month in Greenville, N.C.
